Two way light switch connection

In this post, we are going to show you two way light switch. A 2-way switching connection means you can control electrical equipment like bulb water pump etc by two switches placed at different places, generally used to control water pump from different stories of a house. The two-way switch can be operated from any of both switches independently. Spouse your water pump is on from ground story you can turn off it from 2end story and vise versa.

Typically there are two methods of making a two way light switch The 1st is 2-wire control and another is 3-wire control. We are going to explain both the methods in the tutorial with pics as well as through the video.

Required Components For The Project

  • Connection wires
  • Two 2-way switches
  • Bulb or any AC equipment
  • AC supply

Two Way Light Switch Using Two-Wire Control

In this method two wires are connected between both switches, this is the old method. Connections are shown in the diagram given below.


As you see in the Schematic Diagram of 2 way switch circuit above, you will find that the phase is connected with the common of the first switch. PIN1 & PIN2 of the first two-way switch are connected with the PIN1 & PIN2 of the second switch. The bulb is connected with the Common pin of the second switch and the other end of the Bulb is connected with the Neutral line. Working on two-way switching is given in the table given below. This configuration of this circuit is similar to the EX-NOR gate in digital electronics.

2-way Switch Wiring using Three-wire control

This method is commonly used nowadays as it is efficient than the Two-Wire control system. It is also a new method to make a 2-way switching connection as it is a little different from the two-wire control method.

According to the Schematic Diagram of 2 way switch circuit above, the common of both the switches are are connected with each other. PIN-1 of both the switches are connected with the phase and PIN2 of both the switches are connected with pin2 and the lamp is connected in series.

Output Condition Is Explained In The Table Below

Applications Of Two-Way Switching:

  • Mostly in the staircase.
  • Erroneous tripping of safety/circuit protection equipment.
  • A big building having two entry and exit gates.

    In NEITHER case does switch_1 have a Single position that
    turns the light ON hence it can't be marked
    In case_2 switch_2 can be labeled ON/OFF !
